GDCOC Turned Independent Unit Again
Minister of Interior Tzvetan Tzvetanov fulfilled his threat to restore the previous status of the service – something he voiced dissent with at the very start of his mandate
Margarita Stoyancheva | 06.11.2009 18:15Whit the final adoption of amendments to the Law on MI on Friday MPs allowed the restoration of General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC) as an independent unit. Thus the service detached from the control of General Directorate Criminal Police (GDCP) to which it was attached about a year and a half ago with a ruling of the tripartite coalition’s government. Straight after taking office this summer, Minister of Interior Tzvetan Tzvetanov announced his intention to restore GDCOC to its initial competences. Back then he commented that even the name given to the unit by his predecessor Mihail Mikov (Counteraction to Organized and Heavy Crime) was abusing. After e meeting with employees end-July Tzvetanov declared that in fact many of them have not performed any activity in the time since GDCOC was under its new status, given to it as a part of the reforms in MI.
